The 2025 Open Championship could be decided this weekend in Saint Louis!

This is the tightest finish we have ever had in 7 years of Open Championship competition as Coty Saucier, Tristan England, and Tyler Menninga are all still in contention and with England and Menninga meeting up head-to-head in the Monster Jam racing bracket this weekend at the Dome in Saint Louis.

We also have a whole cast of spoilers including Weston Anderson, Jon Zimmer Jr, Bryce Kenny, and Bill Payne who could play a major role in determining how this championship is decided.

If you’re a fan of monster truck racing, then these next two weekends—and especially the racing in Saint Louis on Saturday—are going to be fun times because we’ve never had our year-long championship decided in the final weeks like this.

Here’s a rundown of everything to watch in racing this weekend (and also an explanation of what it all means at the bottom for this unfamiliar with the MTROC).

===== THE LEADERS AT A GLANCE =====

Coty Saucier is in 1st place with Tristan England in 2nd and Tyler Menninga in 3rd. The Open Championship season ends at the end of this month, so we have 2 more weekends of racing before we crown the champion. Tyler has won the championship 3 times. Coty has been runner-up twice. Tristan finished 3rd last season.

The rankings are determine by a combination of each driver’s Total Points and Average Points. Right now it looks like this:

  • Coty Saucier is #1 in Total Points (13138) and #5 in Average Points (208.54) for a rank score of 1 + 5= 6

  • Tristan England is #5 in Total Points (10191) and #2 in Average Points (237.00) for a rank score of 5 + 2= 7

  • Tyler Menninga is #6 in Total Points (10164) and #3 in Average Points (231.00) for a rank score of 6 + 3 = 9

The rank score is what determines the overall rankings: lowest score wins. Average Points is the first tie-breaker.

For Tristan or Tyler to pass Coty, they need to get a lower rank score than him. That can happen by improving their Total Points ranking or their Average Points ranking, or if Coty gets passed up in either column and gets a worse rank score for himself.

Coty Saucier has no more events this season so he’s just watching. Tyler and Tristan are both scheduled to race with Monster Jam at the Dome in Saint Louis. Each round is expected to be worth 127 points because it is a stacked field of competitors. In fact, this will be the 2nd biggest event of the year behind only the World Finals. The winner will receive approximately 508 points.

===== STANDINGS BASED ONLY ON TOTAL POINTS =====

This is not the overall ranking--this is just the first half of it. But gaining ground in Total Point is an important way to gain spots in the rankings, especially this late in the season.

1 – Coty Saucier – 13138 (leader)

2 – Weston Anderson – 13085 (-53) – MAX = 14441

3 – Jon Zimmer Jr – 11631 (-1454) – MAX = 12987

4 – Triton Robbins – 10199 (-1432)

5 – Tristan England – 10191 (-8) – MAX = 10699

6 – Tyler Menninga – 10164 (-27) – MAX = 10672

7 – Bill Payne – 9967 (-197) – MAX = 10963

8 – Dalton Widner – 9287 (-680) – MAX = 9795

9 – Devin Winfield – 8854 (-433) – MAX = 10210

The first important key in Total Points is that Weston Anderson is only 53 points behind Coty Saucier. He is almost guaranteed to pass Saucier because Weston has 4 events in Tacoma this weekend paying out 113 points for each heat win. When he passes Saucier, this will add 1 point to Saucier’s rank score, dropping him to 7 points. That would tie him with Tristan England, but England would get the spot due to the Average Points tie-breaker. Unless Weston loses in the first round every event in Tacoma, he will pass Saucier and give England the #1 rank (at least temporarily).

The second important key is that Tyler Menninga and Tristan England are only 8 and 35 points behind Triton Robbins. They will each be racing in Saint Louis where each round win is worth 127 points. If they advance through the first round, they will jump ahead of Triton and gain 1 point for their rank score. This by itself would give England the #1 rank, and combined with Weston Anderson’s move it would give Tristan and lead that would be tough to beat this late in the season.

The third important key is that Tyler Menninga is only 8 points behind Tristan. If Tyler outscores Tristan in Saint Louis, then he will move head of Tristan in Total Points and flip-flop their rank scores. Tristan would still end up with the #1 ranking, but it would be through the Average Points tie-breaker.

The fourth important key is Bill Payne. He doesn’t run Monster Jam but in the MTROC every race counts. Payne has 4 events left on his schedule (Placerville and Lakeport, California) and while we don’t know exactly how many points will be available (because that changes based on which drivers are involved), he theoretically will have enough points to jump ahead of both Tyler and Tristan and knock them down 1 rank score.

===== STANDINGS BASED ONLY ON AVERAGE POINTS =====

The average points is the second part of the equation. A driver’s overall rankings is based on the combination of his or her Total Points and Average Points ranking.

1 – Ryan Anderson – 261.61

2 – Tristan England – 237.00 – MAX = 243.16

3 – Tyler Menninga – 231.00 – MAX = 237.16

4 – Bryce Kenny – 224.82 – MAX = 237.13

5 – Coty Saucier – 208.54

6 – Donald Epidendio – 203.74

7 – Bari Musawwir – 198.08 – MAX = 206.27

8 – Dalton Widner – 197.60 – MAX = 204.06

The only factor in play with Average Points is Bryce Kenny. If Bryce Kenny wins in Saint Louis, he could pass Tristan and Tyler in Average Points, which would knock them down in their rank scores. If Tristan reached the semi-finals, he should be safe even if Bryce wins the event.

===== POSSIBLE SCENARIOS FOR COTY =====

As long as Weston wins at least 1 round in Tacoma, there are only about 2 ways for Coty Saucier to keep the #1 rankings:

1) Both Tristan and Tyler lose in the first round and either Bryce Kenny wins or Bill Payne scores at least 225 points

2) Both Tristan and Tyler lose in the first or second round and both Bryce Kenny wins and Bill Payne scores at least 352 points

===== POSSIBLE SCENARIOS FOR TYLER =====

For Tyler Menninga, he almost needs a win in Saint Louis. If he does win and Tristan is runner-up, he’ll need Bill Payne to collect 606 points to break the tie in Tyler’s favor. If Tyler wins and Tristan loses in the semi-finals, then Payne only needs 479 points for Tyler to win. If Tristan loses in the first or second rounds, then a win from Tyler would give him the #1 rank regardless of what Bill Payne does.

===== POSSIBLE SCENARIOS FOR TRISTAN =====

Tristan England has the championship in his grasp as he seems to have the most-direct route to first place. Once Weston passed Coty in Total Points, Tristan will be the top rank. If he can win in Saint Louis, I’m not seeing any obvious outcome except for Tristan winning the championship.

If Tyler beats Tristan in the finals, then could have a 3 way tie for first place. Tristan would win that tie so long as Bill Payne scored fewer than 606 points over the next two weekends.

If Tristan loses in the semi-finals in Saint Louis, then he needs Bill Payne to score fewer than 478 points to retain the #1 rank, or he’ll need Tyler to also lose in the semi-finals or sooner.

===== SUMMARY =====

This is a very fun ending to this year's racing! There may be some other scenarios that could yet play out (such as if Triton Robbins shows up with a racing event over the next two weekends) but no matter what happens we're excited to see how it plays out. There's no doubt that these three drivers are great racers and deserving of the championship, but in the end only one will get that prize.

===== WHAT IS THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP? =====

The Monster Truck Racing Open Championship (MTROC) is an independent points system that combines monster truck racing results from every event around the world into one global championship. The driver rankings are based on a 20-race minimum and are scored by finding the driver with the best combination of Total Points and Average Points. This allows us to provide a fair comparison when dealing with teams that run different schedules and different opponents.

We are a totally volunteer operation and rely on reports from promoters, drivers, and fans to feed us the information we need to track these racing results. YOU can send in brackets from any event you attend where monster trucks are racing side-by-side. We use that information not only to award points but also to create an historical catalogue of monster truck events.

The first open championship was the WMTRL which ran from 2004-2007. The MTROC is the second edition of the open championship and began in 2019. This season in 2025, we have tracked results for 1697 events and 248 active drivers.  Thank you to everyone who has sent in results to help us make every race count!
